The earliest known use of shell for cameo carving was during the 15th and 16th centuries. Before that, cameos were carved from hardstone. The Renaissance cameos are typically white on a grayish background and were carved from the shell of a mussel or cowry. In the mid 18th century, explorations revealed new shell varieties. Helmet shells from the West Indies, and queen conch shells from the Bahamas arrived in Europe, thus sparking a big increase in the number of cameos that were carved from shells.
A stunning cameo pendant from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Crafted in carved jet, the thick, oval shaped pendant features a central cameo. The stunning cameo depicts the side profile of a young woman with her flowing locks piled atop her head in a delicate updo. The young woman is also shown wearing a floral crown, and she is dressed in loose draped fabrics. The cameo is bordered by an oval-shaped sterling silver frame. The pendant is topped with a carved jet bail, which would allow the piece to be added to a chain. This stunning cameo pendant is extremely substantial in size and makes a wonderful statement piece. It is perfect for a collector or lover of Victorian jewelry!
Measurements: The brooch measures approximately 3" tall, 1 7/8" wide, and has a depth of 1/2".
Condition: The overall condition of the piece is great. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling silver setting or carved jet. The shell cameo is intact and secure of chips. The jet bail is intact and secure.
